50th Anniversary Celebration
A GRAND NIGHT
When Hank Holderfield asked me to capture in words the essence of our 50th Anniversary event, I realized that it would be like trying to catch a rainbow or preserve a beautiful butterfly without taking the life out of it. Without a doubt, the evening of Saturday July 24, 2010, provided an event that will rank as the most elegant, prestigious, memorable and sheer fun that the FSOMS will ever plan. The weekend of July 23 - 25 also presented one of the very best CE programs we have ever offered. When the attendees find a presentation so pertinent that they ask the lecturer to come in early (at 7:30 AM Sunday after a wild night of celebration) that says a lot about the quality of the subject matter and the presenter. This course was on rh-BMP, and was given by the engaging and personable Dr. Daniel Spagnoli. I didn't see a single person duck out early on Sunday morning. The members hung on every word of this contemporaneous presentation.
Saturday evening's 50th celebration began with an elegant cocktail party. The ladies were gorgeous in their finest and the gentlemen, spiffy in their tuxes. While the cocktail party was in progress, four of our Founding Fathers: Drs. Ernie Cervis, John Coker, Fred Novak and Don Tillery Sr., who had honored us by their somewhat difficult trek to the venue -- had a special photo sitting to record their presence fifty years after helping to found our Society. They had a very special good ol' boys reunion, because as luck would have it, these four are also the very best of friends who have always enjoyed each other's company. Minutes later, twenty-seven Past Presidents lined up on the steps of the Breakers courtyard for their group photo. The presence of so many Past Presidents came close to assembling nearly every living Past President, and the camaraderie was palpable.

Both the cocktail party and delicious dinner were held in the elegant Circle Room of the Breakers Hotel, in Palm Beach. This room is without a doubt a National Treasure - exuding an elegance that most OMSs could not have afforded in the early years of the past century! The planning committee had engaged the Debbie Taylor Band from Miami. This fabulous musical group produced lovely light jazz and pop music as a background for the cocktail party. During dinner they added lovely soft music, which allowed much pleasant conversation. When dinner was over, President Diaz introduced Larry Cook who gave a vignette of the life and contributions of the four attending Founding Fathers. A special gold medallion, in commemoration of their contribution to our Society, was given to each Founding Father as they were introduced to their fellow oral surgeons. President Diaz presented Dr. Don Tillery, Sr. with a special new award named: "The Bridge Builder's Award," -- based on Don's favorite poem which tells about a traveler through life, who, now near life's end, builds a bridge over the troubled waters blocking his path, and when asked why, responds: "There follows after me today a youth, whose feet must pass this way. This stream that has been as naught to me, to the fair-haired youth might a pitfall be. He too, must cross in the twilight dim: Good friend, I'm building the bridge for him." Dr. Diaz, introduced Don's son, Don Tillery, Jr., who narrated a presentation with photographs, of his dad's life. It was an honor to which Don Sr. is most certainly entitled. Few men have extended such sincere friendship to so many members of our Florida, South Eastern and AAOMS Societies. It was an emotional honor, and with father and son interacting, lovingly presented!
After the Founding Father and Past President introductions, the Debbie Taylor Band took off in full force, and things really started to swing! They played so much good dance music, the dance floor was packed all evening. What fun for the dancers and great entertainment for the folks who didn't dance. Debbie, and members if her group, sang great vocals and played from so many genres of music that anyone could find something they loved for their dancing or listening pleasure. Debbie and the band were supposed to finish at 11 PM, but folks were having so much fun that she obliged with an extra 15 minutes of dance tunes.
From all the comments heard, the 50th Anniversary celebration was the most fun of any meeting - ever. We can thank the Breakers highly professional staff, our professional suppliers (each of whom contributed substantial financial support for this special event) and Hank Holderfield and staff, for their great effort to make this event such a success. It was indeed, A GRAND NIGHT!
